Bilbo's Journey
Bilbo Baggins wasn't part of the plan. A fellow homesteader who had adopted one of our Great Pyrenees puppies reached out and offered us one of his New Zealand Kiko bucklings. At first, we politely declined. We were already growing our herd with larger breeds like Lamanchas and Nubians, so we simply weren't looking to add another buck.
A few weeks later, he called again. This time, he wasn't trying to sell Bilbo—he simply felt this little buck belonged with us. We agreed to meet him, and the moment we saw him, we understood why. Bilbo was much smaller than expected, underweight, and seemed completely lost. We never learned exactly what had happened before he came to us, but it was obvious he needed a fresh start. We had a doe raising kids at the time, and although she wasn't interested in adopting him, we were able to give him a little fresh goat milk to help him get the nourishment he needed during those first few months.
Today, Bilbo is still much smaller than a typical New Zealand Kiko buck, but his size has never slowed him down. He's grown into a sturdy little goat with a huge personality and an even bigger heart. What he lacks in height, he makes up for with confidence, friendliness, and the kind of gentle nature that makes everyone smile. Around the homestead, Bilbo has proven that sometimes the smallest member of the herd leaves the biggest impression.
