Meet Freya

🐾 You might spot Freya exploring around the yard, relaxing in the shade, or quietly keeping an eye on the homestead. If she's not wandering the property, she's probably enjoying a well-earned nap somewhere peaceful.

Freya's Journey
Some stories begin with a plan. Freya's began with a field of forgotten hay.
On August 13, 2021, we were helping a local farmer after he had surgery. Heavy rains had ruined hundreds of square bales scattered across his pasture. Since the hay could no longer be sold or fed to livestock, he generously offered it to us to use around the homestead.
As we loaded bale after bale onto the trailer, something unexpected happened.
The tall grass suddenly began to move, almost like a scene from Jurassic Park. Out darted a tiny gray kitten—no more than six weeks old—crying as loudly as she could.
I picked her up, and the moment she felt safe, her entire little body relaxed. She took one deep breath, melted into my hands, and simply let herself be held.
With the Texas August heat beating down, we tucked her into the air-conditioned truck where Maxi kept her company. She quickly curled up and fell asleep, finally able to rest.
Before leaving, we searched the entire area, hoping to find her mother or other kittens. There was nothing. She was completely alone. So she came home with us.
That tiny kitten who appeared from the grass became Freya, and she's been part of our family ever since.
A year later, Freya became a wonderful mother herself, raising Susan, Tammy, and Edward here on the homestead. Watching her care for her own kittens after such a lonely beginning has made her story come full circle.
Sometimes the animals who choose us arrive in the most unexpected ways. Freya wasn't part of the plan that day—but we can't imagine the homestead without her.
