Midnight's Journey
Sometimes, the family you were meant to have finds you in the most unexpected places.
Back in March 2014, shortly after we left the military, we moved into a small trailer park in Missouri.
One afternoon, while taking our trash to the community compactor, we heard tiny cries coming from inside.
Aaron climbed into the compactor to investigate and discovered a cardboard box.
Inside were seven frightened kittens—five little girls and two boys. Someone had thrown them away and left them there.
We couldn't leave them behind. We took the kittens home, cleaned them up, and started finding families for them. The five girls were adopted almost immediately, but no one wanted the two boys. So they stayed with us. Those two brothers became Midnight and Tigger.
From the very beginning, Midnight was curious, adventurous, and always wanted to know what everyone was doing. Whether he was climbing trees, lounging in the grass, or supervising chores from a comfortable spot nearby, he quickly made himself an important part of our family.
Years later, when we moved from Missouri to Texas, Midnight made the journey with us and settled into life on the homestead just as naturally as if he'd always belonged here.
Sadly, his brother Tigger crossed the Rainbow Bridge after several wonderful years on the homestead. Midnight still carries on as the family's quiet observer, expert mouse patrol, and faithful companion.
Today, you'll often find him stretched out in the sunshine, watching the world go by, wandering through the grass, or appearing exactly where you least expect him.
It's amazing to think that a tiny kitten left inside a trash compactor would grow into one of the longest-standing members of our homestead family.
Sometimes the smallest rescues leave the biggest footprints on our hearts.
