Meet Groot
🐾 You might spot Groot making his rounds around the fence line, relaxing beside Freyja, or quietly watching over the goat herd from the shade. During kidding season he's always nearby, keeping a careful eye on the newest arrivals. If you happen to see a rooster confidently following a giant white dog across the pasture... you've found Groot and one of his favorite patrol partners.

Groot's Journey
Groot's story began in May 2019, when we picked him up along with his brother, Olaf, from a farm shortly before our move to Texas. The two brothers spent their puppyhood together, learning and growing side by side. As they matured, however, natural sibling rivalry between two guardian males became stronger. Wanting both boys to live happy, stress-free lives, we made the difficult decision to let Olaf move to another farm where he could thrive.
That left Groot to become the heart of our guardian dog team.
From the beginning, Groot has been everything you could hope for in a livestock guardian dog. Standing close to 180 pounds, his size alone is enough to make strangers think twice—but anyone who knows him quickly realizes that beneath all that fluff is one of the gentlest souls you'll ever meet.
Groot takes his responsibilities seriously. Every morning he patrols the property, quietly checking on the goats, pigs, and chickens before settling wherever he's needed most. If one of the animals wanders too far, Groot is usually already watching. He doesn't bark unless he has a reason, and his calm confidence helps keep the entire herd relaxed.
His greatest joy, however, is his family.
Groot is the devoted lifelong partner of Freyja, and together they have welcomed four litters of puppies into the world. While many of their pups have gone on to become beloved guardians for other families, Sophie and DaBaby stayed here on the homestead. They were born in their third litter on March 25, 2025, and continue the legacy of their parents as the next generation of livestock guardians. He's patient, protective, and incredibly gentle, showing his puppies how to be respectful guardians just as he learned himself.
One of the funniest friendships on the homestead is between Groot and our special rooster. Somehow, that rooster decided he was also a livestock guardian dog, and Groot simply accepted him as part of the team. The two can often be found making their rounds together, as if protecting the farm is a two-species operation.
Despite his enormous size, Groot is really just a giant teddy bear. He loves leaning against people for affection, soaking up ear scratches, and spending quiet evenings watching over the animals he loves. A gentle giant whose greatest strength has always been the love he gives to his family and the animals he protects.❤️
To us, Groot isn't just protecting the homestead.
He's protecting his family.
