Beltane's Journey

Some animals become part of the family.

Others become the family.

Beltane has been with us since the very beginning of our goose adventure.

She hatched on May 1, 2021, and because she was born on Beltane—the ancient spring festival celebrating new life—her name was an easy choice.

She almost wasn't ours.

A friend who raised geese had already sold every gosling she had. I had missed my chance. Then, just a couple of days later, she sent me another message.

"One more just hatched. Do you still want her?"

The answer was an immediate yes.

We brought Beltane home when she was only a day or two old, making her the very first goose at Leddy's Homestead.

She quickly proved that she wasn't just another goose. She was born to be a mother.

The following spring, Beltane faithfully sat on a nest of eggs even though we didn't have a gander. Knowing nothing would hatch, I couldn't bear to see her wait for babies that would never come.

So we found her one.

The same friend had another gosling available, and that little gander became Jack.

Today, Jack is Beltane's lifelong mate. Together they raised their own daughter, Sabrina, but Beltane's family reaches far beyond biology.

She has lovingly helped raise Frigg, Ducky, Simba, and Loki, and today she's the proud grandmother of Littlefoot and Petrie.

If there's a lonely gosling, Beltane adopts it. If there's a youngster who needs protection, she's there.

She watches over the flock with the patience and gentleness only a true matriarch can have.

She may have been our first goose, but these days she's known for something much bigger.

She's the grandmother, the babysitter, the teacher, and the heart of the flock.
