Navy's Journey
Some animals come to us with a story we'll never fully know.
Navy is one of them.
On October 4, 2023, we received a call asking if we could take in a pig that had been found wandering alongside a busy highway. A sheriff's deputy had picked him up before he or anyone else was hurt, but there wasn't a permanent place for him to go.
So he came to us.
When we first met him, he was terrified. He wanted nothing to do with people. If anyone got too close, he'd huff, snort, and make it very clear that he wanted to be left alone. Whatever had happened before he found his way here had left him unsure whether humans could be trusted.
One thing stood out immediately.
His ears were gone.
We don't know how it happened. Maybe another animal injured him while he was surviving on his own. Maybe someone hurt him. The truth is, we'll probably never know.
What we do know is that none of that matters anymore.
Here, Navy has a safe place to sleep, fresh food every day, plenty of room to explore, and all the mud he could ever dream of.
Trust doesn't happen overnight.
For more than two years we've simply let Navy move at his own pace. We never forced him, never rushed him, and never asked for more than he was ready to give.
Today, he'll slowly walk over and sniff my hand before wandering off again. I still can't pet him, but that's okay.
Every little step is progress.
His journey reminds us that healing isn't measured by how quickly someone learns to trust again. Sometimes it's measured by the courage to take one small step forward.
Navy may never become a cuddly pig, and that's perfectly fine.
He's safe.
He's loved.
And he'll always have a home here.
